Designer Handbags Are A Social Status Symbol
I’ve always thought that they were. Designer handbags are status symbols to a LOT of people. It tells a lot about who you are, what you value, your spending habits and how important fashion is to you.
It’s interesting to note that the Asian market is making a significant impact in the designer handbag industry, while manufacturer’s happily complain that they can’t keep the bags on the retailers shelves.
With Asia being the world’s biggest market for Western luxury goods, international brands are shifting focus from Paris, New York and London to the fast-growing emerging markets in the region.
But, a social status symbol? Sure. Many of us here in the United States associate people into classes with their choice in clothes, homes, cars and yes, handbags. I mean, how many times have YOU raised your eyebrow when you see a Dolce and Gabanna on someone’s arm?
“The reason why Asians buy so many luxury brands is that in Asia you are what you wear. A luxury brand is a symbol that defines who you are and your social status,” Chadha told AFP. “People judge each other by what brand of handbag they are carrying.”
Have you or do you assign a status symbol to someone’s handbag? What does it mean to you?
